ArtMattan Films is featuring two acclaimed films on ArtMattan TV in celebration of Black History Month, offering audiences a deep exploration of Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Andalusian history and culture.
“Gurumbé: Afro-Andalusian Memories,” directed by Miguel Ángel Rosales, traces the largely overlooked African influence on Spain’s iconic flamenco traditions. The documentary journeys across Africa, Europe, and Latin America, illuminating the historical reach of the African Diaspora and its impact on music and dance. Critics have praised the film’s careful balance of performance and scholarship, describing it as authoritative and compelling.
“Marighella,” directed by Wagner Moura, dramatizes the final years of Brazilian activist Carlos Marighella during the nation’s military dictatorship. The film stars Seu Jorge as Marighella, portraying his leadership of an urban guerrilla movement against the regime. Moura’s direction captures the era’s brutality and the resilience of those who resisted, earning critical acclaim for its intensity and historical fidelity.
Both films are available to stream now on ArtMattan TV, forming part of ADIFF’s Black History Month programming. They continue ArtMattan Films’ three-decade mission of bringing stories of people of color from around the world to U.S. audiences, highlighting histories, struggles, and creative expression that often remain underrepresented in mainstream cinema.
