Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the launch of an artist competition and site selection for a memorial to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, to be located at Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

This announcement coincides with the fifth anniversary of Justice Ginsburg’s passing on 18 September 2020, marking a significant step in commemorating the legacy of the Brooklyn-born Supreme Court Justice. The memorial will celebrate her contributions to civil rights, gender equality, and the rule of law, while offering a space for reflection and inspiration in one of New York’s most iconic waterfront parks.

Governor Hochul emphasised that Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a daughter of Brooklyn who became a leading figure in American jurisprudence. Over her forty years of service as a federal judge, she transformed the law and led with determination and integrity. The memorial will allow future generations to visit her home borough and be inspired by her commitment to equal justice under law, her legal expertise, and her dedication to removing barriers. The project is intended to create a space that serves as a beacon of hope.

Jane C. Ginsburg, Justice Ginsburg’s daughter, and Clara Spera, her granddaughter, expressed excitement about the memorial and look forward to seeing how artists will interpret and honour her legacy.

Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight highlighted that the memorial will provide a lasting tribute to Justice Ginsburg and a source of inspiration for generations. The artist competition is intended to encourage bold and creative proposals that reflect her fight for equality, her trailblazing career, and her impact on American society.

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso noted that the memorial will allow the community to reflect and find inspiration in Justice Ginsburg’s story. The site selection in Brooklyn acknowledges her roots and reinforces the borough’s role in celebrating cultural and civic achievements.

Brooklyn Bridge Park President Eric Landau stated that the park is honoured to host the memorial, providing a space for the community to reflect on Justice Ginsburg’s life and ongoing influence on justice, equality, and opportunity.

The Call for Artists invites submissions from individuals and design teams to create a memorial highlighting Justice Ginsburg’s impact on American law and society. The competition will take place in two phases, with Phase 1 finalists selected in Spring 2026 to advance to Phase 2 for detailed proposal development. Phase 1 submissions are due by 2 February 2026.

The project is supported by a $1 million state capital grant administered through Empire State Development. The Ruth Bader Ginsburg Memorial Commission, established in 2020 and including family members, former clerks, and arts and advocacy leaders, is working to raise additional private funds to support the project.
