Japan has secured its position as the leading travel destination in the world for the fourth consecutive year according to the 2026 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.
The rankings were determined through a survey of more than 798,867 readers across the United States, providing a comprehensive overview of preferred travel locations. In addition to the national achievement, Tokyo was ranked as the second-best big city globally, while Kyoto secured the tenth position in the best big cities category.
The annual awards are regarded as a significant symbol of excellence within the international travel sector. A full list of winners and further highlights are scheduled for publication in the November 2026 issue of Condé Nast Traveler.
The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) serves as the official tourism board for the nation, working to inspire international visitors with a focus on sustainability and the preservation of history and culture. The organization encourages travelers to explore the country in a manner that supports local businesses and indigenous cultures while helping to conserve natural sites.
