Qatar Airways and Boeing announced Wednesday a historic agreement for the purchase of up to 210 widebody airplanes. The deal, signed in a ceremony witnessed by U.S. President Donald J. Trump and His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, represents Boeing’s largest-ever widebody order and Qatar Airways’ single largest order to date.
The purchase includes a firm order for 130 of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner aircraft and 30 of the new 777-9 airplanes, with options for an additional 50 aircraft from both models. Boeing reported that this significant order is expected to support approximately 400,000 jobs in the United States and will position the Middle Eastern airline for further international expansion.
Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, stated the agreement with Boeing marks the largest aircraft order in the airline’s history and represents a critical step in investing in a modern, efficient fleet to meet strong passenger demand. He emphasized that this order builds upon two consecutive years of record commercial performance, enabling the airline to continue delivering its products and customer experiences.
Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, expressed the company’s honor in receiving this record-breaking order, which she said solidifies Qatar Airways’ future fleet with Boeing’s market-leading widebody aircraft. She noted that Boeing looks forward to building 787s and 777s for Qatar Airways into the next decade, facilitating greater global connectivity with enhanced efficiency and passenger comfort.
Qatar Airways currently operates over 150 Boeing aircraft, including 777 and 787 passenger jets, as well as 777 Freighters. With this new purchase, Qatar Airways is set to become the largest 787 Dreamliner operator in the Middle East.
