
Seven projects at the Los Alamos National Laboratory have been chosen to lead research efforts under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. This national initiative aims to develop the world’s most powerful integrated science discovery platform by combining artificial intelligence, supercomputing, quantum systems, and advanced scientific instruments.
The selected projects are designed to advance critical capabilities in fusion, nuclear energy, national security, and scientific research. Los Alamos will serve as the lead institution for seven specific initiatives. These include the development of an autonomous AI framework for closed-loop nuclear fuel qualification and the use of reinforcement learning for scientific problem-to-code generation via measurement-based reward functions. Other lead research will focus on physics-informed multimodal foundation models for fracture evolution in the upper crust, AI-guided creep-fatigue life prediction for fusion structural materials, and an AI-enabled decision-support platform for subsurface energy recovery optimization.
The laboratory will also pioneer an evolutionary agentic AI system, leveraging deep co-design and generative AI to enhance water prediction models. In addition to its primary leadership roles, Los Alamos will provide support for 19 other projects, led by partner institutions.
The Phase I awards for the Genesis Mission are intended to identify promising pathways toward transformative scientific capabilities and establish a foundation for future large-scale investments. Project teams are tasked with designing and demonstrating research workflows that integrate artificial intelligence with scientific investigation. The goal is to evaluate whether these integrated approaches can accelerate the pace of discovery, improve predictive capabilities, enhance experimentation, and generate new scientific insights.
Laboratory Director Thom Mason noted that the selection of these projects reflects the expertise of the laboratory’s researchers in high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and scientific discovery. Mason indicated that these investments are expected to accelerate breakthroughs that strengthen national security, energy security, and the scientific competitiveness of the United States.
The Genesis Mission functions as a collaborative national effort, uniting government, industry, academia, and philanthropy to drive scientific advancements through a modernized discovery platform.
