Direct-to-consumer brands are increasingly migrating to Shopify at a rate more than three times higher than those leaving the platform, according to new ecommerce data.

An analysis by TechnologyChecker reveals that Shopify now commands nearly 46% of the global ecommerce platform market, which is more than double the share held by WooCommerce. The shift indicates a structural change in the technology requirements of growing brands as they outgrow the plugin-dependent architecture used by WooCommerce.

Lucent Innovation, an official Shopify Plus partner, reports that the trend is fueled by a demand for more robust scalability. Key drivers for the migration include Shopify Plus’s checkout extensibility, native first-party customer data ownership, and built-in multi-channel synchronization. These capabilities are often difficult to sustain on WooCommerce as sales channels and order volumes increase.

Many brands that began on WooCommerce report hitting technical ceilings when attempting to implement reliable multi-channel sync or customized checkout processes that do not fail during plugin updates. Lucent Innovation co-founder and CEO Nitesh Kasma stated that established brands are increasingly treating Shopify migrations as a strategic growth decision. Other primary motivators for the shift include enhanced subscription support and more effective unified order management.

Lucent Innovation has been working on the Shopify platform since 2013. Based in Ahmedabad, India, with a U.S. presence in Wilmington, Delaware, the company provides migration planning, custom development, and optimization support for D2C and enterprise clients.
