The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has announced that the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is scheduled to open on Dec. 11, 2026. The new institution is intended to bolster the emirate’s standing as a primary global destination for the arts by providing a platform for modern and contemporary art.
The museum will focus on artistic works produced from the 1960s to the present, aiming to foster cultural exchange and connect diverse global communities. Located on Saadiyat Island, the museum joins an expanding collection of cultural landmarks within the Saadiyat Cultural District, which includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi.
The architectural design for the museum was created by the late Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Frank Gehry. The building is designed to be a landmark at the intersection of land and sea, featuring 30 galleries that are linked by a central atrium. The silhouette of the structure is defined by 10 sculptural cones that reach heights of up to 88 meters. Nine of these cones are clad in stainless steel mesh, while the final cone is composed of onyx and glass.
In terms of scale, the museum features a total built-up area of 80,000 square meters. This includes 11,600 square meters of interior gallery space and 23,000 square meters of outdoor exhibition areas. The sculptural cones are designed not only for aesthetic impact but also to provide natural ventilation and shade to increase the building’s energy efficiency.
Since 2009, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has been curating a collection that explores various artistic themes such as abstraction, popular culture, land, language, and storytelling. The museum intends to present art through a non-linear framework, focusing on the relationships and resonances between different geographies and generations rather than a strictly chronological history.
