The United States made a significant commitment to ocean conservation, pledging over $508 million at the ninth Our Ocean Conference in Greece. The funding aims to address various challenges facing marine environments, including the establishment of marine protected areas, maritime security measures, sustainable fisheries management, and efforts to combat marine pollution.

Among the key initiatives announced is an allocation of $8.5 million for the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation, fostering collaboration on Atlantic Ocean observation, marine spatial planning, and sustainable blue economy development. Additionally, $1.9 million will support ecosystem conservation in the Caribbean region through sustainable financing mechanisms, while another $2.4 million will be invested in preserving critical marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs and mangroves, in Madagascar.

To address the impacts of ocean acidification, the United States published the National Ocean Acidification Action Plan, while committing $100,000 to support the implementation of the International Maritime Organization Greenhouse Gas Strategy in developing countries, particularly small island developing states and least-developed countries.

The Climate Resilience Regional Challenge grant program was also announced to enhance the resilience of U.S. coastal communities to climate change impacts. In the fight against marine pollution, $14.5 million was allocated for the End Plastic Pollution International Collaborative (EPPIC), while efforts to strengthen oil spill response preparedness globally will be expanded through support for five international exercises.

Furthermore, the United States invested $62.5 million in the Save Our Seas Initiative to eliminate plastic leakage into the environment by 2040.

This funding announcement underscores the Biden administration’s ongoing commitment to global ocean conservation efforts and emphasizes the importance of collective action in preserving the health and vitality of our oceans for future generations.
