A tremor unlike anything felt in recent years shook the northeastern United States on Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 4.8-magnitude earthquake centered roughly 45 miles west of New York City, sending jolts from Boston all the way down to Baltimore at 10:23 AM ET.

While, thankfully, there were no immediate reports of major injuries or significant damage, the earthquake served as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the vulnerability of infrastructure in an area not accustomed to such seismic activity.

The shaking lasted for over 30 seconds in New York City, causing temporary closures and delays on subways, bridges, and tunnels. Evacuations from some high-rise buildings were issued; however, there were no immediate reports of damage.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are relatively rare in the northeastern US. The region sits on a geologically stable continental plate, unlike the West Coast, which straddles the boundary of several tectonic plates, a key factor in frequent earthquakes. However, Friday’s event serves as a reminder that no place is entirely immune to seismic activity.

The rarity of such events in the Northeast can lull residents into a false sense of security. Earthquake preparedness becomes less of a priority compared to areas facing a constant threat. Buildings in the Northeast are generally not designed to withstand the same level of shaking as those in California or Japan.

Following the earthquake, experts urged residents to be vigilant following the disruption, while New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a news conference that there were no reports of major damage from the quake.

While the immediate impact of Friday’s quake was minimal, it serves as a valuable wake-up call that even unlikely tremors can occur and that evacuation procedures should be followed at all times.
