Vice President JD Vance visited Michigan this week to highlight the economic impact of the Trump administration’s industrial and tax policies. The visit focused on a reported resurgence in manufacturing, significant capital investments in the state, and a decline in violent crime rates.

Significant capital is flowing into the Michigan automotive sector as companies respond to the administration’s America First agenda. General Motors is investing $6 billion in U.S. manufacturing, which includes a major expansion at its Orion Township plant and the addition of an overtime shift in Flint. Ford Motor Company has committed $3 billion to its BlueOval Battery Park in Marshall, a project expected to create 1,700 jobs, and has added a third shift at its Dearborn Truck Plant.

Stellantis is also contributing to the local economy through a $388 million investment in a megahub in Van Buren Township, along with $140 million for its Detroit plant and $100 million to increase production in Warren. Additionally, Detroit Diesel is recalling laid-off workers and implementing a third shift.

The automotive market saw notable growth in 2025, marking the strongest year for new vehicle sales since 2019. During that period, Ford achieved its best annual U.S. sales in six years, while General Motors reported strong SUV performance. Jeep also saw sales increases for the first time since 2018.

The manufacturing boom extends beyond the automotive industry into technology, energy, and aerospace. OpenAI, Oracle, and Related Digital are investing more than $7 billion in a hyperscale data center campus in Saline Township, which is expected to generate thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions. Other major investments include a $5 billion pledge from Pratt Industries to reindustrialize the country, a $1.5 billion investment by Corning in Saginaw County for advanced manufacturing, and $567 million from Chobani for its La Colombe plant expansion in Norton Shores. GE Aerospace is investing $60 million in Michigan facilities to boost aircraft engine and avionics production. Other regional expansions include Saginaw Control & Engineering with $50 million, Adrian Steel with $43.4 million, and American Rheinmetall with $31.7 million.

On the fiscal front, the Working Families Tax Cuts have impacted Michigan residents through several new provisions. Approximately 1.7 million seniors are benefiting from a new deduction that eliminates taxes on Social Security. Furthermore, a tax exemption on overtime and tips affects roughly 25% of the state’s employees. The administration has also introduced a tax deduction for interest on loans used to buy vehicles assembled in the United States. These measures contributed to average taxpayer refunds of $3,508. The state also received approximately $173 million in initial funding for the Rural Health Transformation Program.

Crime statistics in Michigan have shown a downward trend in 2026. According to recent data, violent offenses have decreased compared to the same period last year, with homicides dropping 19%, rapes falling 18%, and robberies decreasing 17%. In 2025, Detroit recorded its lowest number of homicides since 1964, marking the first time the city’s homicide count fell below 200 in six decades.
