Gen Z travelers are driving a massive surge in interest for the upcoming Halloween season, with searches for the holiday weekend climbing nearly 45% for the demographic.
Overall interest in Halloween weekend travel has increased nearly 15% year-over-year. This rise in engagement is evident in how travelers are planning their trips, with wishlists featuring Halloween-inspired titles up almost 60%. Furthermore, wishlists that include the word “witch” in the title have seen a nearly 15% increase.
As Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, travelers are increasingly looking to build full weekends around the holiday. Salem, Massachusetts, has emerged as the top trending destination in the United States for the weekend.
In response to the trend, Airbnb has curated a selection of 31 stays categorized into five distinct October themes: cinematic landmarks, gothic estates, witchy retreats, cabins in the woods, and homes that hosts suggest may be haunted.
The “From screen to stay” category focuses on properties that allow travelers to step into famous cinematic settings. This includes the Buffalo Bill House, a 1910 Queen Anne Victorian in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania, which served as a filming location for an Academy Award-winning film. Other listings include the Byers Home near Fayetteville, Georgia, which recreates a specific 1983 ambiance, a horror-themed cabin in Big Bear Lake, California, and a themed mansion in Kissimmee, Florida.
The “Gothic grandeur” category features historic architecture, such as the Hewitt, an 1886 Queen Anne Victorian in Philadelphia, and a castle penthouse in Portpatrick, United Kingdom. Other international options include a grade II house near Dartmoor, a gothic mini-castle in County Westmeath, Ireland, and a restored 1871 Victorian townhouse in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.
Reflecting the 15% increase in witch-themed searches, the “Witching hour” theme includes an 1890s farmhouse in Windham, New York, a fairy tale cottage in Logan, Ohio, and a converted 1862 church in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The category also features the Salem Victorian in Salem, Massachusetts, located near The Witch House.
For travelers seeking a more secluded experience, the “Into the woods” category offers rustic accommodations such as a cabin on Versailles State Park Lake in Indiana and an 1850s Appalachian log cabin in Ferryville, Wisconsin.
