The US and EU held a virtual meeting of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) this week, focusing on strengthening cooperation in technology, trade, and security. The meeting was led by U.S. Under Secretary of State Jose Fernandez, Under Secretary of Commerce Marisa Lago, and Senior Advisor Cara Morrow from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, alongside their EU counterparts, European Commission Directors-General Sabine Weyand and Roberto Viola.
The discussions advanced key workstreams of the TTC, including a Joint Roadmap for Trustworthy AI, technology collaboration, and efforts to counter disinformation. The officials also reviewed initiatives to protect human rights defenders online and promote secure digital infrastructure, such as 5G and subsea cables. They exchanged information on best practices for investment screening and highlighted progress in non-market policy monitoring in the medical device sector. Renewable energy sectors, like wind and solar, were also addressed as the U.S. and EU exchanged insights on new trade tools.
Efforts to strengthen supply chains in the semiconductor and solar industries, and enhance bilateral trade and investment, were discussed. The meeting also previewed a Sept. 25 session with stakeholders from the Trade and Labor Dialogue (TALD) to follow up on strategies against forced labor in trade and promote good quality jobs in the green economy.
Both sides reinforced the importance of transatlantic cooperation and agreed to continue engaging with stakeholders through 2024 to shape the future of the TTC.
