Airbnb announced a $1 million investment on Monday to support environmental protection nonprofits and conservation projects throughout Washington. The funding marks the company’s largest community commitment in the state to date.
The investment includes donations to local organizations via the Airbnb Community Fund. Washington’s National Park Fund will receive support to help preserve Mount Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic National Parks. Trout Unlimited will also receive funding to restore waterways and habitats, specifically focusing on salmon and trout populations in areas such as the Olympic Peninsula.
Through a partnership with the nonprofit Leave No Trace, Airbnb aims to promote responsible recreation. The collaboration will bring the organization’s Spotlight stewardship program to Issaquah and integrate outdoor ethics education into host listings to help visitors protect the state’s natural landscapes.
Sustainable forestry will also be a focus of the investment. The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust will receive support to conserve the 1.5 million-acre Mountains to Sound Greenway National Heritage Area, while EFM Investments and Advisory LLC will work to restore forestlands and preserve biodiversity on the Olympic Peninsula.
As part of the announcement, Airbnb is launching a volunteer incentive program. Washington residents who volunteer with Washington’s National Park Fund will be eligible for a $100 Airbnb credit. The program is scheduled to remain active through the end of summer 2027, depending on availability.
The company noted that nearly 50% of Airbnb guests in Washington are local residents who use the platform to explore the state. The new initiatives are intended to encourage local stewardship of the region’s natural landscapes.
