The Cybersmile Foundation’s “Modern Witch Trials” campaign has received widespread acclaim and significant public support, securing 10 awards at this year’s Telly Awards. Launched in February, the campaign addressed the weaponization of social media and the growing problem of mob harassment.

Notably, the campaign earned Gold Tellys in the categories of Social Video – Public Service & Activism, Online Commercials – Advocacy & Causes, and Social Video – Social Responsibility. These prestigious accolades highlight the campaign’s impact and effectiveness in addressing critical social issues through powerful and engaging video content.

In collaboration with JOAN London and Chromista, Darren Aronofsky’s production company, “Modern Witch Trials” creatively draws comparisons between the 17th-century Salem witch trials and contemporary online harassment. This powerful narrative resonated deeply with audiences, sparking meaningful conversations and mobilizing public support.

The campaign’s short film, directed by Emmy Award nominee and Venice Film Festival winner Eliza McNitt, became an international sensation, amassing over 5 million views on social media. Its impact was amplified by endorsements from high-profile figures like Star Trek’s William Shatner, WWE superstar Nicola Glencross, actress Katie Cassidy, and soccer player Jordan Henderson. Their involvement helped bring the campaign’s message to a broader audience, underscoring the importance of tackling online harassment in its various forms.

The Telly Awards honor excellence in video and television across all screens, with this year’s theme emphasizing the use of new technologies and storytelling to address pressing global issues. Amanda Needham, Managing Director of the Telly Awards, noted the impressive quality of this year’s submissions, highlighting the industry’s innovative approaches to storytelling.

The Telly Awards Judging Council, comprising industry leaders from prominent video platforms, television networks, and production companies, selected the winners from nearly 13,000 entries worldwide. This esteemed panel recognized the Modern Witch Trials campaign for its creative excellence and social impact.

By capturing the public’s attention and fostering dialogue around online harassment, Cybersmile’s campaign has made significant strides in raising awareness and promoting change. The success of “Modern Witch Trials” at the Telly Awards highlights the crucial role of creative storytelling in addressing and mitigating the negative impacts of social media.
