Diplomatic discussions between the United States and Austria were held at the annual U.S. – Austria Strategic Dialogue in Washington this week. Ambassador James C. O’Brien, Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, hosted the meeting, which included Ambassador Gregor W. Kössler, Political Director of the Austrian Foreign Ministry, along with senior representatives from both governments.

The dialogue covered a wide range of topics, including global and regional security issues such as crisis management efforts and concerns over foreign information manipulation and malign influence. Cybersecurity, particularly in relation to ransomware, was highlighted, with Austria’s recent hosting of the Counter Ransomware Initiative (CRI) regional workshop being discussed.

In light of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, discussions also focused on energy security and the enforcement of sanctions. Other topics included Middle Eastern relations, shared challenges regarding China (PRC), and joint concerns regarding racism, antisemitism, and anti-Muslim hatred.

Both nations reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, pledging continued political, financial, economic, humanitarian, and diplomatic support. They also addressed the situation in Gaza, emphasizing their commitment to seeking a peaceful settlement while ensuring Israel’s security and addressing humanitarian needs.

The Strategic Dialogue underscored the importance of transatlantic cooperation on geopolitical and security issues, emphasizing the role of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in regional security.

Economic relations between Austria and the United States were noted to be strong, with ongoing cooperation highlighted in areas such as the State Partnership Program between Austria and Vermont and the implementation of a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on apprenticeship cooperation.

Looking forward, both sides expressed a strong interest in deepening their strategic partnership and announced plans to hold the next session of the Strategic Dialogue in Vienna in 2025.
