The White House announced today the rollout of the U.S. Global Health Security Strategy (GHSS), aimed at safeguarding the health, lives, and economic prosperity of both Americans and individuals worldwide.

President Biden, upon taking office, made it a priority to lead the nation through the COVID-19 pandemic, with a commitment to emerge stronger from its aftermath. Recognizing the profound impact of the pandemic globally, which resulted in millions of fatalities, widespread societal disruptions, and substantial economic setbacks, the President has consistently directed his Administration to shield the American populace from future health crises. This initiative acknowledges the interconnectedness of health crises, understanding that a biological threat anywhere poses a risk to health security everywhere. Despite notable strides in the past three years, the Biden-Harris Administration acknowledges that much remains to be done.

The newly introduced Global Health Security Strategy outlines a comprehensive, science-driven approach to fortifying global health security.

Drawing upon advancements made since 2019 and integrating insights gleaned from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Strategy charts a course to fulfill the objectives outlined in the 2022 National Biodefense Strategy and Implementation Plan. Additionally, it aligns with the bipartisan Global Health Security and International Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response Act of 2022, which was integrated into the James M. Inhofe National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023. The Strategy emphasizes locally driven initiatives, equity, and inclusivity as fundamental principles to enhance global readiness in preventing and addressing health crises, including pandemics. Moreover, it envisages leveraging U.S. leadership to galvanize international cooperation towards common objectives, such as increased investment and commitment from other nations.
